[ale] scripting

i was curious, has anyone used a bash script to keep thier system updated?
and i wanted to make sure i had this clear but, even if your not logged in
as root, root is still theoretically active like on and running right?
like cron jobs in root are still running on time and such, i just wanted
to make sure. so i dont screw and let my servers get outdated if i dont
touch them for a week :-p and im not logged in
