[ale] kernel mode pppoe?

Has anyone used the kernel mode pppoe available from roaring penquin? 
The docs indicate you must enable modules, but I prefer not to do so for 
a firewall.  Anyone done this?

I didn't have to buy my radio from a specific company to listen
to FM, why doesn't that apply to the Internet (anymore...)?
