[ale] Hosed on upgrade

I did an upgrade on my kernel.  I kept the old image.  Upon first boot I
got a message saying "Loading linuxEBDA too big" and could go no
further.  When I tried to load the old image I got the same message.

In the process of trying to get the machine back I lost boot to windows
as well so I'm thinking maybe this is a loader thing but have no other
clue.

Pleas Help
