I suppose I could do this, but it's really not a daemon.  I'm using a wrapper 
as a crude way to make a program multiprocess when it wasn't otherwise built 
to do so.  The wrapper looks at the process list to see how many are running 
-- it less than threshold, background another one.  Otherwise, foreground to 
keep from backgrounding too many.  Crude, huh?
