[ale] ubiquitizing the desktop

So, I want to be able to hit up my desktop from anywhere, b/c I get so
tired of having to always open the same 5-20 windows every time I change
which machine I'm sitting at ...

I used to use VNC for this, but due to job constraints, I have to use an
encrypted link and I don't know how well VNC sets up with one of those ...

Any suggestions on mechanisms?  I'll be hitting it up from windows boxes
most of the time, probably, and some linux/X boxes ...
