if the stuff you monitor affects your connectivity  (like router, 
switch, firewall, gateway, email server, cables to the ISP), you want to 
have a reliable alternate route to send the alert.  modem is a good 
one. For people keen  on security, use modem capable of 
hardware-encryption with a dedicated lease line.
