Of course you're right. I also thought of another
reason it won't happen: it would give too much
power to the public.
As it stands, the gov't is first in line to grab
your paycheck, before you even see it. If a
national sales tax were to replace the income
tax, it wouldn't be long before someone
got the bright idea to protest something or other
via a national "don't buy anything" day or week.
If there's anything a politician fears more than
running out of booze, it's running out of money.
