[ale] MDK82 + GNOME = no "Browse" or "Save As" dialogs

I am running Mandrake 8.2 and GNOME.  I have no Browse or Save As
dialogs.  Any time I perform an action that would generate one of these
dialogs, X (perhaps the system itself) becomes sluggish.  The mouse gets
jerky, the panel won't un-hide, and xmms stutters.  This affects all
applications, from choosing the desktop wallpaper in Gnome Control
Center, to saving attachments in Evolution, to opening or saving a file
in the GIMP.

What I am hoping to hear is that someone on this list is running 8.2 and
GNOME and not having this problem.  I would like to think my install got
messed up somehow, because I am getting more disappointed with Mandrake
8.2 the longer I use it.
