[ale] changing PATH

[jojerose at mindspring.com (jojerose at mindspring.com)]

alright a simple question.  I need to update my PATH permanently.  How
do I save the changes so that it's permanently changed?   I tried export but 
that works only for the current terminal.  Thanks
