Sometimes the CD drive will just be too old.  Not that it has "worn out" 
but that it doesn't deal with booting CD-Rs or CD-RWs correctly.  I even 
had trouble with a SCSI CD burner recently; a cheap 58-timer from 
Staples did the trick.
