[ale] Sound problem

I am working on a sound application.
After I am done, I close() the
/dev/dsp and exit.  It hangs at the
close() system call.  fuser shows that
I no longer own the /dev/dsp.

Has anybody seen something like this?
It is on kernel 2.4.8 with cs4281 
soundcard driver.
