[ale] RedHat 7.1 Kernel Upgrade

Greetings all, I am soliciting advice on upgrading the stock kernel of redhat 7.1. My biggest concern is the fact that they use the 2.96 compiler. From what I understand it doesn't compile the kernel source properly. Should I upgrade to a newer compiler before a kernel upgrade? Downgrade? There used to be RPMs available for kernel upgrades but I can't find them on redhats site. Has anyone upgraded a kernel on 7.1 if so can you give a short description of the steps. You know upgrade/downgrade compiler, got source code from X, compiled, etc. Nothing necessarily in detail just an overview.
Thanks
Calvin
