[ale] Bellsouth DSL modems....again

Although I opted for the ethernet external DSL modem
from Bellsouth, I have a friend who wants to use a USB
dsl modem with linux.  

Are these modems compatible?

One additional question.  I have a DSL router...can I
plug the external ethernet modem into this or do I
*have* to connect the modem directly into a PC?
