[ale] [OT] suspend / shutdown / standby / wtf?

Can someone explain the difference between these modes (I know what shutdown
is thanks).  Does anyone know what mode draws the least amount of "juice"
and has the fastest startup/boot time?  My specific application is for my
car computer (http://christopher.bergeron.com).  -which is being ported to
linux (for the TCL/TK touchscreen convienence).
