It's a kludge.  The PS/2->serial adapter doesn't do the voltage conversion
necessary from TTL voltages used on the PS/2 port to the proper RS232
voltages.  So what happens then is that most of the time (when it works)
the computer just accepts +5V as +12V and 0V as -12V.  Frequently this
turns out to be a non-issue.  When it becomes an issue, though, you need
to find a true serial mouse.
