[ale] Samba Just Dies

I have a Mandrake 7.2 system on the office network.  DNS only gets populated
with its DHCP-determined IP adr if it's a WINS client, so I'm trying to
start up Samba on it with no real shares.  Problem is that smbs and nmbd
just die right after starting, with no indication in log.nmb, log.smb, or
/var/log/messages.  Where can I look to even begin to figure out what is
breaking?
