[ale] Trouble with Mandrake 7.2 and manual kernel compiles

Im no rookie at doing a kernel compile, but I normally used Redhat or 
Slackware.  Now that Im using Mandrake i cant seem to compile the kernel at 
all.  I get a as86: command not found; for the error. Im running Kernel 
2.2.17-21mdksecure

Any Advice on how to fix the problem would be appreciated, im trying to try 
vmware, but i need the C Headers for the kernel, and want to compile my sound
