I always unplug *everything* when going away on vacation. Even clocks:
chances are the power will go out at some point while we are gone
anyway. :) I also unplug almost everything during storms and boot up
the laptop. Even with this policy, I've lost applicances due to a
momentary power surge after the power cuts out for a few seconds and
comes back on again. Surge protectors are now a standard part of
any major electrical purchase I make. I may even invest in a
"whole house" system someday that filters your line coming in, instead
of buying dozens of separate protectors.
