[ale] X Still Messed Up At 640x480

I am still wrestling with configuring X for an old Samsung monitor that
only supports 640x480 at an unknown vertical sync (probably 60Hz; this
monitor escapes any of the Web monitor databases).  The best that I have
been able to do, using a 1MB ATI Mach64 card, is a scrambled display
even though the only modes available in the XF86Config file are 640x480
(most recently, I've been starting from an XF86Config file generated by
SuSE's SaX utility).  Can someone e-mail me an XF86Config file that they
KNOW will work at 640x480 so that I can compare it to what I've got?
