[ale] somewhat off topic, not like any windows user would even get it..



No, don't go lifting ground on your computer.  Besides, the ground loop
symptom is hum, and he doesn't say anything about hum; he only mentions
hiss.

Michael Hirsch's suggestion about making sure inputs are muted is the
first thing you should check.
