[ale] Weird fd/NIC interaction.

I've recently noticed that whenever I "dd" a file to /dev/fd0,
my NE2K-clone NIC freaks and starts spewing many messages
into the syslog like, "eth1: mismatched read-page pointers X and Y"
and refuses to send or receive any data henceforth.

"ifconfig eth1 down; dhcpcd eth1" seems to fix the problem
(this is the card that talks to the cable modem).
Anyone seen anything like that before?

In any formula, constants (especially those obtained from handbooks)
