[ale] nic card problems

I am attempting to set my linux box < redhat 6.0 > up to use the cable 
modem I recently recieved from ATT.

The interface eth0 is started on boot yet when I run ifconfig -a it lists 
only the lo interface.

I know this is an old hat question I have seen a couple of times on the 
list but I recently lost my archives.
Any help is appreciated.
