[ale] clobbered fonts--intermittant

Hi,

Sometimes when I exit out of X I'll get a messed up font on my
TTY console.  Only certain characters will seem to be affected,
such as apostrophes, single and/or double quotes, exclamation
points, and so forth.  

Any idea how I troubleshoot this one?  I'm really not sure what's
responsible for the fonts on a TTY or how something in X could
mess them up. Any ideas?
