[ale] ftpd crashing

I'm trying to do a network (ftp) install from an RH 6.2 machine and it
wasn't getting very far.  /var/log/messages shows me

Jun 14 21:33:32 juanita ftpd[2966]: ANONYMOUS FTP LOGIN FROM
192.168.14.1 [192.168.14.1], anonymous at localhost.localdomain
Jun 14 21:53:32 juanita ftpd[2966]: exiting on signal 11: Segmentation
fault
Jun 14 17:53:32 juanita inetd[2349]: pid 2966: exit status 1

over and over again (note the weird timestamps) while the network
installation proceeds (very very slowly).  What could be making ftp
crash?
