Ok I found a fix (below):

make CC_FOR_TARGET=gcc \
AS_FOR_TARGET=as \
LD_FOR_TARGET=ld \
AR_FOR_TARGET=ar \
RANLIB_FOR_TARGET=ranlib

It's still compiling so we will see if it actually works when it is done.
