[ale] IP Aliasing

what does /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 say?
How are you adding the interface? i.e.
/sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.248 up 

Give me some more info and I may have a little better Idea.
What distro are you running?
