[ale] changing X resolutions from a program

Here's a strange question.  I know that it is possible to change the X
resolution on the fly with CTRL-ATL-+ (using the + on the keypad), but
is it possible to do it programmatically?  I.e., can I write a
program, or shell script to change the resolution?
