Actually my main screw up is
'tar cvf *'
For those who haven't had their coffee yet this morning the 'f' option
says to send the tar output to a file. Actually the first file after the
listing of the command line options. So you end up overwriting the first
file that matches '*' with a 'big ole tarfile'(tm).
