[ale] root on a disk?

I remember reading some posts recently about 
something called root-on-a-disk (is that right?). Of course, I didn't need it at 
the time, but as luck would have it, I seem to have corrupted the heck out of my 
root system....even fsck is corrupted. It seems to me that now I can use this 
single disk root system to possibly help fix things. 
??
Can someone remind me of this, and where I can find 
it?
