[ale] VM problems

Twice in the last week I've received some disconcerting messages from
the kernel as follows:

Aug 25 09:33:32 denali kernel: VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for
klogd...

Five or six in a row this morning.  Appears my kernel's having problems
with memory management.  The first time this appeared to happen, my
machine locked up tight.  Couldn't telnet, ping, nothing.  No toggling
of keyboard leds.  Hard reboot.  Anyway, it appears that at that time
Netscape had gone nuts and just started eating up memory.

Anyone seen anything like this before?  Have any insights?
