[ale] DNS stats

Is anyone here familiar with returning DNS stats with bind 8?

I'm running the default compile from SuSE 6.4.  Man named says
using kill (SIGILL) will cause the server to dump a stat file.
I have in my named.conf the following:

statistics-file "/www/named/stats.html";

Unfortunately, the file never gets generated... Man named also says that at compile time the -DSTATS option has to be used for report generating.  How do I check this?  Is there anyway to check compile options?
