Thanks to all who replied. Several folks mentioned the fact that Zip
disks come
with a filesystem on partition 4. That can be changed with fdisk and we
have
disks floating around here with ext2 and various MS filesystems on
partitions
1 and 4. One kind soul even formatted a bunch like floppies - no
partition
table at all.
Anyway that's not the problem. I'd still like to find out what happened
but
rebooting with a good disk in the drive fixed it. Not just rebooting -
we did
that several times while swapping cables. Something about having that
good
disk in there (???).
Am I hallucinating?
