[ale] System Cracking Stories

Can anyone provide me with anecdotal or other evidence regarding systems
that were hacked/cracked as a result of "sniffed" or otherwise captured
clear-text data (e.g., passwords)?  I'd be interested to know what the
cracker accomplished as a result (i.e., set up IRC or FTP servers,
downloaded data or software, deleted stuff) and what kind of time/effort it
took to set things right again.
