You couls always go to the console and login as root and killall -9 X .. That
would work.. but your x shouldn't be locking up with a mouse problem.
try grabing the new version of gpm or Look at your configuartion for
/etc/X11/XF86Config and post that to the list.
It should have nothing to do with gnome. It's either X it's self or gpm
