Your lilo is not installed correctly, I had a similar problem, except it
would print "01".
My problem was this:
cd-rom (atapi) was set as a master, hard drive was set as a slave.

Anyways I switched the setting on HD and CD around, reinstalled lilo, and it
worked. Make sure you look at /etc/lilo.conf and ensure that the path to the
hd is correct.
