I would love to hear an answer to this one, as I had a similar problem: I'd find the box with a XDMCP broadcast from my Exceed client, but when I tried to log on, everything hung.
I was only able to make this work by killing gdm, which Redhat 6 spawns to handle X session requests, and starting xdm. Since gdm appears to be intended as a drop-in replacment for xdm, I still don't understand why xdm works where gdm fails.
