[ale] PATH setup question

I need to change the default PATH when I login through 'xdm' (RH6.0/Gnome).
The PATH set when I login at a vt
is fine, but the X login gets additional PATH components, some of which I
wish to change. I know I could force it in ~/.bash_profile, but I would
rather know where the additions arise.

Where should I look?
