[ale] Error but it works !?!

This is very interesting.
I'm setting up IP aliases, now check this out (RH6.0, kernel recompiled
to support IP alias)

ifconfig eth0:1 10.0.0.1
ok
route add -net 10.0.0.1 dev eth0:1
10.0.0.1: Unknown host
and it does not work, so I try this
route add 10.0.0.1 dev eth0
10.0.0.1: Unknown host
BUT it does work ?. did I miss something ?
now I try
route add -net 10.0.0.1 dev eth0:1
ok

Any ideas ?
