[ale] No printer daemon present

                    How do you make the daemon present?

                    I have Mandrake 6.1 Macmillan distro. I cannot get
my Xerox
                    XJ8C printer to work. It has an emulation of the HP
550C so I
                    use that. Once I got the printer to blink. No more.

                    I checked setup, systems services to see if lpd if
checked. It
                    has an asterisk. I checked lpc status:

                    Xerox
                    queuing is enabled
                    printing is enabled
                    no entries
                    no daemon present

                    so I type "start Xerox" and try to print something
in Maxwell,
                    nothing. I go to printtool and try the test for
ASCII text.
                    Nothing.

                    I go back to lpc status and get the same list, no
entries and
                    no daemon present.

                    I am still a newbie at 13 days and getting
frustrated.
