[ale] ppp and 2.2 kernel problem

I am trying to upgrade to a 2.2 kernel 2.2.6) and everything seemed to
compile fine. It boots and runs everything well EXCEPT, it no longer
will make the ppp connection. I compiled ppp into the kernel and am
using the pppd-2.3 . The script has worked for years. Rebooting into the
old safe 2.0.36 everything works fine (you're reading this aren't you?)
What else am I missing?
