[ale] Still having problems with PostgreSQL install

I got the compiler installed, but the configure script says that it is
not working.  I am able to compile c programs that I write.  Very
confused.  Help.  If I try to use the make command it says the
following:

	You must use GNU make to use Postgres.  It may be installed
on your system with the name 'gmake'.

NOTE:  If you are sure that you are using GNU make and you are
       still getting this message, you may simply need to run
       the configure program.                  

Help newbie please.
