[ale] lilo vga and new kernel

I compiled a new kernel and installed it. The only problem is that I had
'vga=791' set in my lilo.conf. I am doing this because my laptop screen
does funny things when startx changes video modes to svga.
The point is that when it boots with this lilo option my screen goes blank while
booting and never recovers. Any suggestions?
