Why load minix, why not load ELKS
http://www.uk.linux.org/ELKS-Home/
No, it's not a fraternal order; it's the Embedded Linux Kernel Subset for
old and small systems (including PDAs). It doesn't currently have networking
but you certainly could use it as a terminal.
An alternative would be to use NCSA Telnet under DOS with a network card and
packet driver. NCSA Telnet used to directly support the WD8*3 series of
Ethernet cards.

what would be the cheapest and easiest way to setup a 286 on an
network, and what could i use it for?
I was thinkin I could load minix, do a serial connection, and use it as a
dumb terminal. What other uses would a 286 have?
thanx,
