The (pre-CIDR) default for 192.168.*.* is 256 class-C subnets of 256 IPs whereas the default for 10.*.*.* is a single class-A subnet of 16,777,216 IPs. A lot of programs (like route) will assume a netmask based upon "class" conventions (0-127 class A, 128-191 class B, 192-223 class C)
And almost nobody uses 172.16-172.31

Why does everyone use 192.168.1.x for a private domain when 10.x.x.x is so
much easier to remember? I've never understood that!
