There is one last check you can make.  Check the file /etc/nsswitch.conf
and make sure that the host line is this:

hosts:	files dns

if you have dns or just:

hosts:  files

without DNS.  Redhat, by default I believe, puts it at:

hosts:  files nisplus nis dns


If this doesn't fix your problem, it almost sounds like a routing problem.
