1) try setting the environment variable EDITOR=path_to_pico (.bashrc /
.dtprofile / .profile as appropriate)
2) the garbage in your environment looks just like shell functions.
My GUESS is that you were running Midnight Commander (since that is one
of the functions seen) and it aborted and/or didn't clean up after
itself.
