Ian,
The problem may be unrelated to these other things. YOu are probably
coming up in low resolution mode. Try ctrl-atl-(kbd + ) to try to
shift resolutions upward. If that works, then you need to find the
resolution you want, and take out the other resolutions from the
'Modes' line in one of the Screen sections at the bottom of the file.
Another trick is to start up the X server and capture ALL of the
errors
startx >/tmp/xerrs 2>&1
then you can look at the file /tmp/xerrs and see all of the messages
from the server.
