Though you should be able to configure sendmail and fetchmail
such that fetchmail fetches mail from your POP mailbox periodically
and hands it to sendmail for local delivery. I had my system set
up that way a long time ago, but configuring sendmail was a
pain, so now I just use a POP-aware mail reader.
