Well,

I got some great suggestions and after weighing everything carefully, I decided
to switch to the Mandrake distribution.

Why didn't I do this sooner???  (Because I didn't know about it, of course.) 
Mandrake took Redhat and fixed or improved all the little things about it that
bugged me.  And the KDE integration is excellent.  IMHO, Mandrake is what
Redhat should have been in the first place.
