[ale] PCI sound card recommendations

I'm looking to get a PCI sound card for a linux box.

Things I need:

midi
decent audio quality

Toys I wouldn't mind but which aren't essential:

digital in / out
spatial processing of some sort

The SB Live would be ideal, except that it's not likely to ever be supported
under Linux by open drivers.  If people have recommendations and / or
pointers to a web page discussing this (surely this question comes up enough
that there are some, though I can't seem to find them), I'd appreciate it.
